Project

Affordable Housing Renovation/Motel Conversion

Design Approach

California is experiencing a housing and affordability crisis. A growing share of the state’s population is without housing. The conversion of hotels and motels into permanent affordable housing is a solution that is being actively pursued. Our Villages at Broadway project (a former Econo Inn) in Fresno is one example. This run-down motel, once a hip, modern ‘50’s establishment, is being brought back to life as permanent supportive affordable housing for the formerly homeless. Existing motel rooms will be converted to independent units with their own kitchens and baths. A new common area will be created including a community room, laundry room, manager’s and service offices. The bland parking lot at the center of the property will be reclaimed with greenery, decorative paving and site furnishings to create a courtyard that will be more pedestrian-friendly and welcoming to residents. The completed project is also anticipated to contribute to the on-going revitalization of its downtown neighborhood. The project is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion this summer
