Design Approach

Hamiliton Families’ mission is to end homelessness for families in San Francisco, but the organization itself lacked the stability of a permanent home. This project brought together staff who had been working out of two smaller offices into a single 15,000 SF, 3-story plus basement, headquarters.

Our design approach was to renovate the interior while preserving a key asset of this building; despite the building being a zero lot line building on a narrow, 160’ long, mid-block site, the building’s spaces were afforded daylight throughout via windows on the front, skylights over glass floors in the middle of the building, and skylight-enclosed internal lightwell at the rear.

Design interventions included the addition of private offices, meeting and conference rooms, plus the upgrade of communal spaces on each floor where staff could informally connect and collaborate. Upgraded finishes, including a playful use of accent colors on each floor create spaces welcoming and comfortable both to the families seeking support and to the staff and community partners engaged to provide that support. The front elevation is adorned with a mural by Precita Eyes, depicting families in the local community.
