Design Approach
An extensive main floor renovation transformed a series of dark, dated and unremarkable rooms giving each space bespoke features, but with an attention to lightness, connection and materiality throughout. Perfectly “imperfect” logs and live-edged wood provide texture and gravity to the living room: a dramatic new fireplace mantel anchors the space and sits directly across from an informal passthrough counter which connects to the kitchen and dining space beyond. The kitchen and dining spaces, once separated, are united with a dramatic vaulted ceiling with exposed collar ties. The kitchen features custom cabinets and shelves made from salvaged wood from redwood trees downed by storms. New windows, including a new arched window at the end of the dining space, bathe the spaces in natural light animated by the shadows of the trees beyond. New skylights bring in additional light and drama to the primary bedroom and bathroom.
